Biography
Child is an Australian psychedelic blues-rock band formed in 2012 in Melbourne. Known for their heavy, slow-burning riffs and emotionally charged performances, the trio has garnered a loyal following both in their home country and internationally. Drawing inspiration from the blues, stoner rock, and vintage psychedelic sounds, Child's music is often described as raw, soulful, and deeply immersive, with long instrumental jams and atmospheric passages that transport listeners to another era.
The band was founded by vocalist and guitarist Mathias Northway, bassist Danny Smith, and drummer Michael Lowe. Together, they created a sound rooted in the traditions of classic 1970s blues-rock, with clear nods to legends like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Black Sabbath. However, Child's music also incorporates modern stoner and doom metal influences, creating a powerful fusion of the past and present that sets them apart in the contemporary rock scene.
In 2014, Child released their self-titled debut album, which was met with critical acclaim. The record was praised for its gritty, organic sound, characterized by Northway's passionate vocals and searing guitar solos, underpinned by Smith’s deep, groovy bass lines and Lowe’s thunderous drumming. Tracks like "Trees" and "Stone by Stone" became fan favorites, showcasing the band's ability to balance intensity with emotional depth.
Following the success of their debut, Child released their second album, Blueside, in 2016. This record saw the band further honing their sound, with a more polished production and a greater emphasis on melody and atmosphere. The album's expansive, psychedelic soundscapes earned the band further recognition, both within the Australian underground music scene and abroad.
Despite their relatively limited discography, Child has become a prominent name in the international heavy-psych and stoner rock community, performing at major festivals like Desertfest and gaining a devoted fanbase across Europe. Their ability to combine heavy, bluesy riffs with expansive, psychedelic elements has cemented their reputation as one of Australia's standout acts in the genre, and they continue to evolve their sound with each release.
