Biography

Niños Mutantes is a Spanish indie rock band formed in the mid-1990s in Granada. The group emerged from the local indie scene, with drummer Nani Castañeda and bassist Miguel Haro previously part of Mama Baker. Together with singer and songwriter Juan Alberto Martínez, the three musicians decided to create a new band, Niños Mutantes, in 1994. Initially a trio, they gained recognition through a series of demo tapes, garnering praise from key music publications like Rockdelux and Mondo Sonoro.

Their first major break came in 1998 with the release of their debut self-titled EP, followed shortly by their first full-length album, Mano, parque, paseo. The album, heavily influenced by American alternative rock bands like Pixies and Dinosaur Jr., received strong reviews and positioned the band as a prominent act in the Spanish indie rock scene.

As their sound evolved, Niños Mutantes embraced a more complex and introspective approach, incorporating additional members and instruments, such as keyboards and a second guitar. This shift is evident in their second album, Otoño en agosto (2000), which showcased a darker and more mature sound. Over the years, they released several more albums and EPs, gaining widespread recognition and performing at major festivals like Festival Internacional de Benicàssim (FIB) and Contempopránea.

The band reached new heights with their 2002 album El sol de invierno, which solidified their place in the Spanish indie scene. They continued to release music consistently, including their critically acclaimed Todo es el momento in 2008, where they experimented with folk influences and orchestral arrangements.

Throughout their career, Niños Mutantes have remained true to their indie roots while evolving their sound. They are known for their melodic yet powerful guitar-driven songs, thoughtful lyrics in Spanish, and a steady presence in Spain’s alternative music landscape.
