Biography
Kesha Rose Sebert (born March 1, 1987, in Los Angeles, California) is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer known for her eclectic musical style spanning electropop, dance-pop, synth-pop, pop rock, and country influences. She rose to international fame in 2009 with her debut single "Tik Tok," which became one of the best-selling digital singles of all time, selling over 14 million copies worldwide.
Kesha’s career began as a songwriter and background vocalist, contributing to tracks for artists like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Her breakthrough came with an uncredited vocal feature on Flo Rida’s 2009 number-one hit "Right Round." Later that year, she released "Tik Tok" under RCA Records, launching her debut album Animal (2010), which topped the Billboard 200. The album spawned multiple top-ten hits, including "Your Love Is My Drug" and "Take It Off," establishing her as a leading figure in late-2000s pop music.
She followed up with the EP Cannibal (2010), whose lead single "We R Who We R" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Her second studio album, Warrior (2012), featured collaborations with rock artists like Iggy Pop and The Flaming Lips and included the top-five hit "Die Young." In 2013, she achieved another chart-topper with "Timber," a collaboration with Pitbull.
Between 2014 and 2017, Kesha’s career was interrupted by a protracted legal battle with her former producer, Dr. Luke. She filed a lawsuit alleging sexual, emotional, and professional abuse, which led to a public and legal dispute that drew widespread support from the music industry. During this period, she released the powerful single "Praying" (2017), which earned critical acclaim and two Grammy nominations.
Her third studio album, Rainbow (2017), marked a creative and personal resurgence, debuting at number one and showcasing a more introspective and vocally driven sound. It was followed by High Road (2020), a blend of her party-centric roots and emotional depth. In 2023, she released Gag Order , a deeply personal album produced by Rick Rubin that explored trauma, healing, and self-liberation.
In June 2023, Kesha and Dr. Luke settled their legal dispute, ending a nearly decade-long conflict. She then fulfilled her contractual obligations with Kemosabe Records and RCA, launching her own independent label, Kesha Records. Her first independent single, "Joyride" (2024), marked a new era of artistic freedom.
Kesha released her sixth studio album, Period , on July 4, 2025, embracing her signature exuberance while asserting her independence. The album was supported by "The Tits Out Tour," co-headlined with Scissor Sisters. Known for her bold image, advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, animal welfare, and mental health awareness, Kesha has evolved from a pop provocateur into a resilient and multifaceted artist.
