Biography
Carl Mayotte is a Canadian bass guitarist, composer, arranger, and conductor from Quebec City, Quebec. A prominent figure in the contemporary jazz scene, he is best known as the leader of the Carl Mayotte Quintet, a jazz fusion ensemble he formed in 2018. The group features Gabriel Cyr (guitar), Francis Grégoire (keyboards), Damien-Jade Cyr (saxophone), and Stéphane Chamberland (drums).
Mayotte began his professional music career at the age of 16, performing in bars and events across Quebec. He earned a technical degree from Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy, followed by a bachelor’s degree in jazz interpretation from Laval University, and later completed a master’s degree at McGill University’s jazz faculty. Throughout his career, he has traveled extensively across Quebec and to France with the goal of democratizing jazz and making the genre more accessible to wider audiences.
His musical influences span a wide range of genres. While rooted in jazz, Mayotte draws inspiration from pop, rock, and progressive metal acts such as Tool, Primus, and Dream Theater, as well as artists like Kimbra. This eclectic taste informs his innovative approach to jazz fusion.
With the Carl Mayotte Quintet, he has released several albums: Fantosme (2019), Pop de Ville, Vol. 1 (2021), Escale (2022), and Carnaval (2023), the latter being a tribute to Brazilian music. His work has earned critical acclaim, including the Radio-Canada Révélation jazz award for 2020–2021 for Fantosme, a Felix Award for Jazz Album of the Year for Escale, and a nomination for Jazz Album of the Year at the inaugural Gala de l'ADISQ.
In addition to his work with the quintet, Mayotte has contributed to various projects, including Nouvelle R, De Si Belles, and the Marie-Claire Quartet. He has also performed as a sideman on albums by artists such as Félix Connolly, François Doyon, and Mathieu Fiset.
In the summer of 2022, Mayotte founded a jazz music camp in St-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska, designed to bring together musicians of all ages and skill levels. Through performances, recordings, education, and outreach, he continues to promote jazz as a dynamic and inclusive art form.
