Biography
Los Planetas is a Spanish indie rock band from Granada, formed in 1993. Widely regarded as one of the most influential bands in the Spanish alternative music scene, they helped shape the sound of 1990s Spanish indie music with their blend of noise pop, shoegaze, and psychedelic rock. The group’s founding members include Juan Ramón Rodríguez Cervilla, known as J (vocals and bass), and Florent Muñoz (guitar), who have remained the core of the band throughout its evolution.
Los Planetas' early sound drew comparisons to British bands such as My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain, yet their lyrics—sung in Spanish—set them apart in the broader indie rock scene. Their debut EP, Medusa (1993), and the album Super 8 (1994) brought them national recognition, leading to critical acclaim for their innovative approach to combining international indie rock influences with a distinctly Spanish sensibility.
In 1996, the band released Pop, which further solidified their place in the Spanish music landscape. Their following albums, Una Semana en el Motor de un Autobús (1998) and Unidad de Desplazamiento (2000), are considered milestones in Spanish indie music, with tracks like "Un Buen Día" and "La Playa" becoming iconic within the genre.
Over time, Los Planetas expanded their sound, incorporating elements of flamenco into their music. This shift was evident in their 2007 album La Leyenda del Espacio, which fused the rhythms and lyrical themes of traditional Andalusian music with their signature rock sound. This album marked a turning point in their career, demonstrating their willingness to experiment while staying rooted in their origins.
Throughout their career, Los Planetas have maintained a devoted fanbase and have released numerous albums, including Zona Temporalmente Autónoma (2017) and Las Canciones del Agua (2022). Their consistent output and evolving sound have cemented their status as pioneers of the Spanish indie rock movement, influencing countless artists in Spain and Latin America. Today, Los Planetas continue to tour and release music, contributing to their legacy as one of Spain’s most enduring and innovative bands.
