OPERA L´elisir d´amore The Elixir of Love Gaetano Donizetti (1797 – 1848) Comic opera in two acts Sung in Italian with German surtitles Libretto: Felice Romani, after Augustin Eugene Scribe´s libretto to "Le Philtre" by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber World premiere: 1832 in Milan Th, 25.06.2020 REVIVALGROSSES HAUS19:30 - 22:05 Tickets 9,90 € - 51,70 €. Donizetti´s "L´elisir d´amore" is at the same time one of the funniest and most romantic of all Italian buffa operas of the 19th Century. “The musical style of this score is lively, brilliant, truly of the buffo nature… the emotions are handled with the musical passion for which the composer of ‘Anna Bolena’ is famous”, raved Italian critic Francesco Pezzi after the Milan premiere. A young villager falls in love (unluckily at first) with a well-off, but rather capricious farm owner. Along with boastful heartbreaker Beclore, miracle “doctor” Dulcamara (whose love potion is little more than a bottle of local red wine) and an agile chorus of village folk, the cast of characters makes for a turbulent day under the Southern sun. With everything from sweet melodies to fast cabalettas and rowdy crowd scenes, Donizetti weaves together a splendid musical chain of lavish showpieces, unfolding his multi-layered impressions of Italian “dolve vita” with seemingly inexhaustible compositional creativity. But, before a happy ending can ensue, the turbulent tale must first pass through tragic depths, such as Nemorino’s bewildered lament “Una furtiva lagrima” (“A Furtive Tear”), an aria which has been known to bring even the audience to tears.
