Rotting Christ, formed in Athens, Greece, in 1987 by brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis, is one of the most influential extreme metal bands to emerge from Greece. Known for pioneering the black and death metal genres in their homeland, the band has garnered a dedicated international following over decades. Initially leaning heavily into raw black metal in their early releases, including the 1993 album Thy Mighty Contract, Rotting Christ soon began to experiment, incorporating elements of gothic, symphonic, and darkwave music that expanded their unique sound and solidified their place in the global metal scene.
