Alan Parker, director of Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' movie, dies

Alan Parker, director of Pink Floyd

Alan Parker (Matlock, UK) has died at the age of 76 from a long unspecified illness announced on Friday, July 31. The well-known film director directed the Pink Floyd film 'The Wall' and others as famous as 'The Midnight Express', Burning Mississippi', 'Evita', 'The Commitments', 'Fame' - which led to the well-known series TV Show from the '80s -,' Birdy' or 'Bugsy Malone'. He was twice nominated for the Oscars for Best Direction: in 1979 for ‘The Midnight Express’ and in 1989 for ‘Burning Mississippi’.

His career was closely linked to the world of music, he directed the famous Pink Floyd film, 'The Midnight Express' has a memorable soundtrack by Giorgio Moroder, Madonna starred in 'Evita', the film about a street soul group called 'The Commitments' and Peter Gabriel appeared in 'Birdy'.

The movie 'The Wall', released on May 23, 1982, is based on the well-known Pink Floyd album scripted by the group's bassist, Roger Waters, despite the fact that the dialogues are scarce and the plot is overturned in the songs of the English group. The play is disturbing and suffocating surrealism, while depicting German bombardments of England during World War II and raunchy sexual scenes as well as more 'gore' ones.

From his scenes come the images of 'Another Brick On The Wall' in which a teacher humiliates a student for writing poetry, an image of the oppression of the educational system on children until the rebellion breaks out and they destroy the classroom and throw the teacher to the fire.

In the cast of this cult film, appears Irish singer and activist Bob Geldof in the role of the protagonist ‘Pink’, Nell Campbell –appears in ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ - or the well-known actor Bob Hoskins as his manager.
