The Liceu will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its reconstruction and reopening in 1999, after the devastating fire of 1994, in the next season 2019/20. A recital will be held to commemorate the date in which the famous soprano Anna Netrebko and her husband Yusif Eyvazov will participate.

Other recognized voices that will step on the boards of the Liceu during the next season are Javier Camarena, Juan Diego Flórez, Roberto Alagna, Aleksandra Kurzak, Elena Zilio, Maria José Moreno, Jorge de León, Celso Albelo, Marta Mathéu, Joyce DiDonato, Anita Rachvelishvili, Klaus Florian Vogt, Clémentine Margaine, Gregory Kunde, Elena Sancho Pereg, Maite Beaumont...

The next season, under the name 'The Power of ÓOera', will begin on October 7th with 'Turandot', by Puccini, a new production by Franc Aleu - a habitual collaborator of La Fura dels Baus - directed by Josep Pons, director musical of the Liceu, with the Swedish soprano Irene Theorin.

Katharina Wagner, great-granddaughter of the composer, is the producer of 'Lohengrin', and Josep Ernst Köppingler, that of 'Il Barbiere di Siviglia', by Rossini. These are two new productions not seen before in the Barcelona’s lyrical coliseum.

Also the zarzuela 'Doña Francisquita', by Amadeu Vives, and the opera 'Alcione', by Marais, with musical direction by Jordi Savall, in co-production with the Teatro de la Zarzuela and the Opera Comique de Paris. There will also be 'Aida', by Verdi, with scenography by Josep Mestres Cabanes, and 'Carmen' by Calixto Bieito. Finishing the list are 'La clemenza di Tito', by Mozart, 'Semiramide' and 'Cavalleria Rusticana'.

Beyond the opera, three dance shows will also be performed, such as María Pagés exploring 'Yo Carmen' and relating it to 'Sherezade', a symphonic concert - Mahler's Second - and various chamber and choral concerts.

The facade of the Liceu will begin the rehabilitation, both that of La Rambla and that of Sant Pau street, on March 18 and it is foreseen that these improvement works will finish in September of the same year. It is the only element that has remained unchanged in the great theater after the devastating fire that it suffered in 1994. The project is to recover the façade of Oriol Mestres dating from 1874.

The Caixafòrum and the Liceu have collaborated to bring to Barcelona the exhibition 'Opera, passion, power and politics' of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

On the other hand, Christina Scheppelmann, current artistic director of the Liceu is one of the candidates to direct the Paris Opera although she also has other offers. Therefore, it is more than likely a new command in the artistic direction of the Liceu.
