Biography

Seth is a French black metal band formed in 1995, recognized for being one of the pioneering forces in the French black metal scene. Emerging from Bordeaux, the group was part of a wave of bands that helped shape the genre within France, bringing a distinctly French perspective to a style deeply rooted in Norway. Seth’s music combines the ferocity and darkness typical of black metal with atmospheric elements and often includes themes related to existentialism, philosophy, and French history.

Their debut album, Les Blessures de l'Âme (1998), was critically acclaimed and marked a significant step in the development of French black metal. Known for its dense atmosphere and poetic lyrics in French, the album established Seth’s approach to the genre, differentiating them from their Scandinavian counterparts. Les Blessures de l'Âme remains a cult classic within black metal circles and was later re-recorded to celebrate its legacy.

Following this, Seth experimented with various styles across their discography, integrating more avant-garde and symphonic elements in works like Divine X (2002) and Era-Decay (2004). These explorations demonstrated the band's willingness to evolve while maintaining a commitment to the foundational elements of black metal. However, Seth went on hiatus for several years before returning to the scene with The Howling Spirit (2013), which was met with strong reception and reinforced their place within the black metal community.

In 2021, Seth released La Morsure du Christ, an album that pays homage to their debut while addressing themes of French cultural identity and history. Through their long-standing career, Seth has become emblematic of French black metal, with a reputation for intellectual lyrics, atmospheric soundscapes, and a dedication to preserving the genre’s intense spirit while reflecting on France’s heritage.
