Biography
Redd Kross is an American rock band known for its infectious blend of punk, power pop, and glam rock. Formed in 1978 in Hawthorne, California, by brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald, the band initially went by the name Red Cross, a nod to the symbol often seen on medical supplies. Early on, they became a fixture in the Los Angeles punk scene, playing shows alongside influential bands like Black Flag and the Germs. By the early ’80s, they shifted to the name Redd Kross to avoid legal troubles with the American Red Cross and released their debut EP, Red Cross (1980), which showcased their playful, irreverent style and teenage energy.

Their 1984 album, Teen Babes from Monsanto, was a turning point, featuring cover songs from artists like David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. This release highlighted their eclectic tastes and knack for blending genres, laying the foundation for the power-pop-influenced sound that would define them. With their critically acclaimed albums Neurotica (1987) and Third Eye (1990), Redd Kross expanded their fan base, gaining a reputation for catchy melodies, witty lyrics, and high-energy performances.

Throughout the 1990s, Redd Kross continued to evolve, embracing elements of psychedelic and alternative rock. Albums like Phaseshifter (1993) and Show World (1997) showcased a matured sound, with polished production and clever pop hooks that found both critical and commercial success.

After a hiatus in the early 2000s, Redd Kross returned with Researching the Blues (2012) and Beyond the Door (2019), proving their ability to stay relevant in the ever-shifting rock landscape. Redd Kross’s distinctive style, irreverence, and enduring DIY spirit have cemented them as cult icons in American rock, and their legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians.
