Biography
JADE, a Catalonian atmospheric death metal trio, has carved out a distinct niche in the global metal scene since their emergence around 2018. Led by multi-instrumentalist and vocalist J. (also known for his work with Foscor), alongside guitarist A. (Vidres a la Sang, White Stones) and later drummer B., the band’s music is often succinctly labeled as “atmospheric death metal” — though this description barely scratches the surface of their expansive sonic vision.
The name JADE draws from the ancient greenstone mineral revered across civilizations — from Mesoamerican to Asian cultures — for its spiritual symbolism and perceived connection between the earthly and the divine. This historical and mystical depth informs much of the band’s lyrical content, which explores themes of humanity, death, dreams, and the esoteric. As described by J., their music functions as “a tribute to the timeless obscure metal language,” blending early death/doom influences with atmospheric black metal into an intense, epic form that transcends eras, much like the jade cults themselves.
Their debut demo, Smoking Mirror (2018), set the stage for what would become a richly layered discography. It was followed by their first full-length album, The Pacification of Death (2022), which received critical acclaim for its innovative fusion of heaviness and atmosphere. Critics compared their sound to acts ranging from Bolt Thrower to Katatonia, yet JADE maintained a unique voice within the genre, earning them a growing international following.
In 2024, the group released a split LP with SANCTUARIUM titled The Sempiternal Wound , further refining their signature sound ahead of their sophomore album. Released in early 2025 via Pulverised Records, Mysteries of a Flowery Dream marks a bold evolution in the band’s trajectory. Described by J. as “a journey into the dialogue between conscious and subconscious dreaming states,” the album dives deep into dream interpretation, cosmic guidance, and the Mayan cosmovision. Tracks such as “The Stars’ Shelter,” “Light’s Blood,” and “Shores of Otherness” reflect these thematic explorations, while the artwork features Ixchel, the Mesoamerican moon goddess symbolizing both creation and destruction.
Musically, Mysteries of a Flowery Dream showcases a more melodic and textured approach without sacrificing intensity. The band experiments with broader guitar techniques, subtle synths, and cleaner vocal delivery, crafting a sound that evokes early ’90s dark metal romanticism while remaining firmly rooted in modern innovation.
With a current lineup based in Catalonia, Spain, JADE continues to push boundaries, fusing mythology, introspection, and heavy soundscapes into a compelling artistic statement. Active and prolific, the band remains one of the most intriguing voices in contemporary atmospheric death metal.
