Biography

Maya Jane Coles, the 29-year-old British-Japanese DJ and producer, has garnered substantial recognition in the music industry, amassing millions of streams on platforms like YouTube and Spotify, and a significant following of 3.2 million on SoundCloud. In 2017, Coles released her most ambitious project yet, her sophomore album Take Flight, through her own label, I/AM/ME.

With performances across more than 40 countries, Coles has graced diverse venues ranging from Tate Modern and MOMA to stadiums, deserts, and prestigious nightclubs. Her career has been marked by numerous accolades, including Beatport's 'Staff Pick: Artist of the Year' in 2011 and awards from Mixmag, DJ Mag, FACT, and SPIN for categories such as Best Producer and Best DJ.

Coles has been featured on the covers of over 20 magazines across eight countries, including Mixmag, DJ Mag, and Rolling Stone. Her influence extends beyond music, with notable appearances in Vogue, Nylon, and GQ, and a prominent role in the Dr. Martens AW15 campaign.

She started producing hip-hop at 15, shifted to dub and house music, and released her first track, "Sick Panda," on Dogmatik in 2007.

Coles initially formed the live electronic duo She is Danger with Lena Cullen, gaining acclaim for their remixes of artists like Gorillaz and Groove Armada. Despite this success, Coles's solo career took precedence, and She is Danger went on hiatus.

Her track "What They Say," released on Real Tone, marked a significant moment in her career, achieving top positions on Beatport and Resident Advisor's charts. Subsequent releases, including EPs on Hypercolour and Mobilee, further established her reputation, leading to her debut album Comfort in 2013. The album, produced entirely by Coles, was praised for its eclectic sound and featured collaborations with artists such as Tricky and Miss Kittin.

Coles's 2014 releases included the club hit "Getting Freaky" and the EP "Watcher." She continued to explore new projects, including her 2015 album under the alias Nocturnal Sunshine, which won Best Producer at the DJ Mag awards and was featured in DJ Mag's Top 10 Albums of 2015.

In addition to her solo work, Coles has remixed tracks for a range of artists, from Bonobo and The XX to pop stars like Sia and Florence & The Machine. Her production work includes collaborations with artists like Alpines and Chelou.

As a DJ, Coles has built a reputation for her skills and has been featured in Resident Advisor's DJ Top 10 charts. Her contributions to the DJ Kicks series and Fabric 75 further solidified her status. Coles has headlined major clubs and festivals worldwide, including Coachella, Glastonbury, and Fuji Rock, and has curated her own festival stages at events like BPM and ADE.
