Biography
India Ramey is an American singer-songwriter and Nashville-based artist whose music blends alt-country, Americana, and southern gothic storytelling into a powerful, cinematic sound. Her journey to music was unconventional: raised in a poor household in Alabama, she initially pursued a career in law, becoming a domestic violence prosecutor in an effort to help survivors like her mother. However, her passion for music ultimately led her to leave her legal career behind and dedicate herself fully to songwriting and performance.
A granddaughter of a Sand Mountain bluegrass and gospel musician, Ramey was immersed in music from an early age, singing Jessi Colter songs into a curling iron by the age of four. Her sound draws from a wide range of influences, including Willie Nelson, Pat Benatar, and The Ramones, resulting in a unique fusion of honky-tonk grit, rock energy, and raw emotional depth.
She has released five studio albums, beginning with Junkyard Angel, which earned an Independent Music Award nomination for "Best Country Song." Her 2017 album Snake Handler gained national attention, landing her on Rolling Stone's "10 New Country Artists You Need To Know" list. The 2020 release Shallow Graves further solidified her reputation, with Rolling Stone describing her as "part honky-tonk, part Black Sabbath" and BBC’s Ralph McLean calling her "a singer of the truth."
In August 2024, Ramey released her most acclaimed work to date, Baptized By The Blaze, produced by Luke Wooten (The SteelDrivers, Dierks Bentley). The album is a bold statement of resilience and rebirth, chronicling her journey through trauma, addiction, and recovery. Inspired by her experiences with childhood abuse, panic disorder, and overcoming a 12-year dependence on medication, the record has been hailed by Saving Country Music, No Depression, and The Bluegrass Situation as her most powerful work yet.
Songs like "The Mountain" and the title track "Baptized By The Blaze" use potent metaphors of fire and transformation to convey empowerment, while tracks such as "Piece Of My Mind" confront industry prejudice and reclaim her narrative. Other songs, like "Silverado" and "Down For The Count," celebrate unapologetic female agency, offering defiant anthems against patriarchal judgment.
A two-time SXSW and three-time AmericanaFest showcasing artist, Ramey has toured extensively, opening for artists like Corb Lund and Maggie Rose. In 2025, she will perform on the Sirius XM Outlaw Country Cruise and continue a spring tour, further establishing her presence on the national stage.
