Biography
Filippo Neviani, known professionally as Nek, is an Italian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born on January 6, 1972, in Sassuolo, Modena, Italy. Active since 1991, Nek has become one of Italy’s most successful and enduring pop-rock artists, with a significant following across Europe and the Spanish-speaking world.
Nek began his career in the early 1990s, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1992. His breakthrough came in 1993 when he placed third in the Newcomers section of the Sanremo Music Festival with the song "In te," which sparked public debate for its lyrical themes. His career gained major momentum in 1997 when he participated in the main section of Sanremo with "Laura non c'è," a song that became an international hit across Europe and Latin America. The accompanying album, Lei, gli amici e tutto il resto, sold over a million copies and was released in both Italian and Spanish, marking the start of his bilingual career.
His 1998 album In due was a major success, achieving triple platinum status in Italy and platinum in Spain. It featured the chart-topping single "Se io non avessi te" and solidified his reputation as a leading figure in Italian pop-rock. Over the following decades, Nek consistently released successful albums, including Una parte di me (2005), which peaked at number three in Italy and Switzerland and spawned the hit "Lascia che io sia...," winner of that year’s Festivalbar. His 2006 album Nella stanza 26 earned him the Lunezia "Poesia del Rock" award for lyrical excellence.
In 2009, his tenth studio album Un'altra direzione became his first to top the Italian charts, certified platinum. He has released a series of acclaimed albums since, including Filippo Neviani (2013), Prima di parlare (2015), and Unici (2016), all of which were certified platinum or gold. In 2010, he released the compilation Greatest Hits 1992–2010: E da qui, which spent over 64 weeks on the charts.
Nek has actively participated in major cultural and humanitarian events, performing at Live 8 in 2005, the 25th World Youth Day at the Vatican in 2010, and multiple charity concerts. He was a coach on the Italian talent show Amici di Maria De Filippi in 2016. In 2015, he placed second at the Sanremo Music Festival with "Fatti avanti amore," winning awards for best arrangement and radio popularity.
A versatile artist, Nek plays vocals, guitar, bass, and drums, often performing all instruments on his albums. In 2024, he returned to the Sanremo stage, competing with Francesco Renga on "Pazzo di te." Married since 2006 and a father, Nek remains a prominent figure in Italian music, celebrated for his melodic songwriting, emotional depth, and long-standing connection with his audience.
