Biography

Vetusta Morla is a Spanish indie rock band hailing from Tres Cantos, Madrid, known for their evocative lyrics and dynamic sound. Formed in the summer of 1998 by schoolmates from the José Luis Sampedro high school, the band takes its name from the character "Morla," an ancient turtle from Michael Ende’s novel The Neverending Story.

The band's lineup solidified in late 1998 with Pucho (Juan Pedro Martín Almarza) on vocals, David García "El Indio" on drums, Jorge González on percussion, Guillermo Galván on guitar, Álvaro B. Baglietto on bass, and Juan Manuel Latorre on guitar and keyboards.

Vetusta Morla began gaining traction with their early demos, 13 horas con Lucy (2000) and Vetusta Morla (2001), leading to performances at various music competitions and collaborations with producer David Hyam. Their consistent gigging throughout Spain, particularly in Madrid's vibrant live music scene, helped them build a dedicated following.

In February 2008, the band released their debut album, Un día en el mundo, which received critical acclaim and was hailed by journalist Santiago Alcanda as "the best debut album in the history of Spanish rock." This was followed by their second album, Mapas, in 2011. Their third album, La deriva, was released in 2014, further solidifying their place in the Spanish music scene.

Vetusta Morla continued their success with Mismo sitio, distinto lugar (2017) and Cable a tierra (2021). The band is known for their eclectic sound, which combines elements of rock, pop, and electronic music, and they have become a staple at major alternative music festivals in Spain and beyond, such as Bilbao BBK Live and Low Festival.

In addition to their studio albums, Vetusta Morla has ventured into other creative projects, including composing the soundtrack for the video game Los ríos de Alice and collaborating with the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Región de Murcia for benefit concerts.

Throughout their career, Vetusta Morla has been recognized with numerous awards, including multiple Premios de la Música Independiente and Rolling Stone's Best Group of the Year. Their commitment to their craft and innovative approach to music and visual storytelling have made them one of the most influential bands in the Spanish indie rock scene.
