Biography

Marie Ulven Ringheim, born on February 16, 1999, in Horten, Norway, is a singer-songwriter and record producer best known for her indie pop project Girl in Red. Her music, characterized by its introspective lyrics and bedroom pop production, has garnered widespread acclaim. Ulven's early works, including the EPs Chapter 1 (2018) and Chapter 2 (2019), were recorded in her bedroom and focus on themes of romance and mental health. These releases quickly gained traction, leading to a significant online following.

Her debut studio album, If I Could Make It Go Quiet (2021), released through AWAL, was both a critical and commercial success, earning her three Norwegian Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. Following this success, Ulven signed with Columbia Records and released her second major-label album, I'm Doing It Again Baby! in 2024, which received moderate commercial success.

Girl in Red has been recognized for her impact on the music industry, particularly within the queer community. She has been lauded by outlets like Paper, which labeled her a queer icon, and The New York Times, which described her as "one of the most astute and exciting singer-songwriters working in the world of guitar music." To date, she has sold over five million certified digital units in the United States, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2022, Ulven was honored with the Telenor Culture Prize for her "artistic distinctiveness and explicit messages of boundless love."

Marie Ulven grew up in a quiet town with her sisters and divorced parents. Her interest in music was sparked by a guitar she received from her grandfather, which she began playing at the age of 14. Ulven is self-taught in guitar, piano, and music production, and she initially released music on SoundCloud under the name "Lydia X" before adopting the moniker Girl in Red. Her breakthrough single, "I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend," released on SoundCloud in 2016, quickly gained popularity, leading to her rise in the indie music scene.

In 2021, Girl in Red became a popular symbol within the LGBTQ+ community, particularly on TikTok, where the phrase "Do you listen to girl in red?" became a discreet way of identifying as lesbian. She has since performed on major stages, including opening for Taylor Swift during the U.S. leg of The Eras Tour in 2023.

Ulven's music often explores themes of love, mental health, and queer identity, drawing influence from artists like Taylor Swift. Despite her growing fame, she remains grounded, residing in the Grünerløkka district of Oslo. Ulven has been open about her struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, which she was diagnosed with in 2021.
