Biography

María Rosa García García, born on January 15, 1978, in San Fernando, Cádiz, is better known by her stage name Niña Pastori. A prominent Spanish flamenco singer (cantaora), Niña Pastori has established herself as a significant figure in the contemporary flamenco scene.

Early Life and Career

Niña Pastori was born into a musically inclined family, being the only daughter among five siblings. Her father, José García, was a military man, while her mother, known as "La Pastori," was a flamenco singer. Her stage name, "Niña Pastori," originated from her childhood nickname, reflecting her identity as "the girl" among her brothers and as "La Pastori's daughter." Initially, she performed under the name "La niña de la Pastori" before shortening it.

Pastori's musical journey began early. By the age of six, she was already performing in flamenco clubs in Andalusia alongside her mother. At just seven years old, she won a singing contest at the "El Chato" club in San Fernando, impressing audiences with her talent. One of her early mentors was the legendary flamenco artist Camarón de la Isla, whose influence shaped her initial purist flamenco style.

Rise to Fame

Niña Pastori's breakthrough came at seventeen with the release of her debut album, Entre dos puertos (1996), produced by Paco Ortega and Alejandro Sanz. The album, which included the hit single "Tú me camelas," sold over 150,000 copies, marking her entry into the mainstream music scene. While her early work adhered to traditional flamenco, she gradually incorporated pop elements into her music, broadening her appeal without losing her flamenco roots.

Her subsequent albums, such as Eres luz (1998) and Cañaílla (2000), further solidified her reputation. Cañaílla, produced by Alejandro Sanz and Josemi Carmona, was a tribute to her hometown and returned to more traditional flamenco sounds. Over the years, Pastori continued to evolve her style, experimenting with different genres while maintaining the essence of flamenco.

Notable Works and Achievements

Throughout her career, Niña Pastori has released ten albums and sold over two million records. Her albums María (2002), No hay quinto malo (2004), and Joyas prestadas (2006) showcase her versatility, blending flamenco with pop, boleros, ballads, and other genres. Joyas prestadas features personal interpretations of songs by artists like Joan Manuel Serrat, Alejandro Sanz, and Maná, demonstrating her ability to transcend genres.

Her work has earned her numerous accolades, including four Latin Grammy Awards, with three for Best Flamenco Album and one for Best Folk Album. She is also the only flamenco artist to have been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.

In 2014, Niña Pastori collaborated with Mexican singer Lila Downs and Argentine artist Soledad Pastorutti on the album Raíz, which won the Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album. That same year, the trio also featured on Santana's album Corazón with the track "Una Noche en Nápoles."

Recent Years and Personal Life

Niña Pastori's more recent work, such as the albums Ámame como soy (2015) and Bajo tus alas (2018), continues to explore her personal style, blending deep flamenco roots with contemporary influences. Bajo tus alas features collaborations with artists like Manuel Carrasco and Pablo Alborán, and was well-received for its emotional depth and vocal prowess.

In addition to her musical achievements, Pastori has received several prestigious honors, including the Medalla de Andalucía in 2018 and the Honorary Award for her National and International Career at the Premios Flamenco En La Piel awards the same year.

Niña Pastori is married to Julio Jiménez Borja, known as "Chaboli," who has been a significant collaborator in her music, serving as her producer, composer, and percussionist. She continues to be a beloved figure in flamenco, admired for her authenticity and emotional connection with her audience.
