Biography
Elsa y Elmar is the musical project of Colombian singer-songwriter Elsa Margarita Carvajal, born on July 31, 1993, in Bucaramanga. Known for her unique style, which she describes as "spiritual pop," Elsa has garnered widespread recognition for her emotionally charged music, blending pop with introspective lyrics and melodic influences from various genres.
Carvajal began her musical journey at the age of nine, taking music lessons in her hometown. By 16, she had enrolled in a jazz academy, and in 2011, she moved to Boston to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. It was during her time in the United States that the concept of "Elsa y Elmar" was born. The name "Elmar," meaning "the sea" in Spanish, represents her fans and the people around her, whom she considers the "sea" that supports her musical endeavors.
In 2013, Elsa y Elmar released their first EP, Sentirnos Bien, featuring six tracks, including the standout single "Me Viene Bien." This song earned her the top prize in the Latin category of the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, catapulting her into the spotlight. Two years later, she opened for the British band Coldplay in front of 40,000 people at Bogotá's Estadio El Campín, further establishing her as a rising star in the Latin music scene.
Elsa y Elmar’s debut full-length album, Rey, was released in 2015, followed by performances at major festivals like Estéreo Picnic in Bogotá and Tecate Coordenada in Guadalajara. Her next album, Eres Diamante (2019), earned her a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
In 2020, Elsa released the EP Cuatro Veces Diez, and in 2022, she received four Latin Grammy nominations for her album Ya No Somos Los Mismos. These nominations included Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, cementing her place as one of Latin America's most promising artists. Elsa y Elmar's anticipated new album, Palacio, is set for release in 2024.
