DIRECTORY • Bernstein » Mass INTERPRETERS AND GUEST ARTISTS Kazushi Ono, conductor William Dazeley, baritone In collaboration with the ESMUC Cor Madrigal Cor Lieder Càmera Cor infantil amics de la Unió Cor de Teatre PROGRAM The work arose from a commission by the young widow Jacqueline Kennedy for the opening of the JFK Center for the Performing Arts in Washington in 1971. Bernstein decided to compose a mass, but was soon seduced by the power of popular music and musical theatre. And thus a monumental work was born, with more than 30 vocal and instrumental pieces, an orchestra of more than 100 musicians, including rock instruments, keyboards, percussion, three choirs and a solo voice. The closing stages of the work, in the voice of the celebrant, are unequivocal: “The Mass is ended, go in peace”.
