More information about the concert:

"My music comes from the soul of my African descent, my music is a scream against injustice, racism, immigration, violence and power." With these words, singer Nilza Costa in one interview best explained the idea behind her music. She was born in El Salvador, Brazil, and since the beginning of her music career, she has researched African music and combined it with Brazilian musical expressions. So in her music we hear everything that Brazilian rhythms and dances like candomblé, capoeira, sambe duro, naculelê or cantigas de roda bring. About 10 years ago Nilza Costa moved to Italy, and somehow in parallel with the change of place came the love of jazz, so now we can say that the music she performs with her quartet is a combination of African and Brazilian roots and modern jazz music that sometimes borders by improvisation. If the musical background changed over time, the theme of Nilza’s songs remained similar. From the beginning, he points out social problems, speaks loudly about injustice in the world, but also personal experiences. "My story is similar to many other stories of black women around the world. Music is my scream of strength and hope," explains Nilza Costa. She has released three albums so far - "Revolution Rivoluzione Revolução" from 2014, "Roots" from 2016 and last year’s "Le notti di San Patrizio - Distorcao do tempo". This album brought her a great reception with the audience and she was present on many world music charts during the last year, and the renowned Songlines wrote about it: "Le Notti di San Patrizio is a brave excursion into Afro jazz, with various tracks bursting into a flurry of saxophone and drum kit halfway through. The album excels in its exploration of voice and percussion ... an enjoyable listen." The Nilza Costa Quartet are coming to the Swamp to promote this album and bring a great mix of modern jazz with African and Brazilian traditional rhythms and melodies.
