Daniel Johnston dies of heart attack

Daniel Johnston died of a heart attack on Tuesday, September 10, just by 58 years. A cult musician and songwriter, he was very fond of the alternative music scene. His homemade cassettes, recorded with low quality, his drawn portraits, handcraft when it comes to making pop and folk songs and naïve lyrics that contrasted with his broken voice inspired the entire scene of the '90 alternative rock such as Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam, Tom Waits, Wilco, Sufjan Stevens, Yo La Tengo, Beach House and Death Cub for Cutie.

Johnston was an icon of the DIY (do it yourself) from the '80s and' 90s. He was taught himself, he was recorded and distributed. The musician suffered a bipolar disorder that limited the frequency of his live performances, in fact he had not been on tour since 2017.
